When Christina is taken to court for fraud Michael speaks up for her, resulting in a lenient sentence and reconciliation with sister Mariella. Back in his church he takes confession from new parishioner Roz Demichelis, a gambling addict who has embezzled huge sums from her work place and intends to kill herself. Michael manages to dissuade her but is exhausted and fails to take a call from Helen Oyenusi, whose mentally ill son Vernon is accidentally shot dead by police whilst threatening suicide. Michael Kerrigan is a dedicated, middle-aged priest in a run-down Northern parish, caring for the seriously ill mother who contributed to his miserable childhood. Christina Fitzsimmons is a beleaguered single mother of three, sacked from her lowly paid job for taking money from the till and preparing for her little girl's communion. Already struggling on meagre benefits her financial worries increase when her mother dies and she cannot pay for the funeral.
